Bringing the Stories of our World to Life through Big Data and Data Visualization

Join us for an inspiring look at how Big Data is being used to understand everything -- from social media usage, consumer behaviour, social uprisings, virus outbreaks, (the list goes on) -- first hand from renowned Data Scientist Hilary Mason. See how creative presentation of data using Data Visualization techniques can increase understanding and tell that data story to the world, from researcher and designer Nadia Amoroso and her colleague Haim Sechter. Register early to save your seat!

Hilary Mason was named one of Fast Company’s Top 100 Creative Minds in Business for 2013 and is a sought after speaker on Big Data. She is currently  Data Scientist in Residence at Accel Partners, a Silicon Valley VC firm, and formerly was Chief Scientist at Bitly. At Bitly she sifted through the records of bit.ly clicks to find patterns. She was able to show what time of day people use their desktops versus their tablets, and how social media usage was shaped by the Arab Spring. You’ll find her blog at hilarymason.com.

Nadia Amoroso is Chief Creative Officer and co-founder of DataAppeal. She specializes in visual representation, creative mapping, design, and data visualization. Nadia is a professor of urban design and landscape architecture at the University of Toronto, and has lectured on the topic of visualization for over 10 years. She recently published “The Exposed City: Mapping the Urban Invisibles”. Nadia will explain the research she has done in how to visualize data.

Haim Sechter is co-founder and CEO of DataAppeal. He has over 15 years of experience in analytics and business intelligence. Starting his career as a data analyst, he discovered the importance of getting organizations to embed data into their processes. He will be sharing some of the best practices of data visualization.

Register now for the Inspiration Day program and be prepared for a whole new perspective on the constantly growing amount of data we create and that surrounds us every day.

Canada’s first national Open Data Hackathon competition immediately follows the Inspiration Day Program, featuring prizes totalling over $35,000 in cash, and opportunities to pitch to VCs, this is a great opportunity to stretch your app design abilities using federal government data sets. Teams can sign up or individuals placed in teams. For more information visit the CODE site: https://canadianopendataexperience.com/
