Description: Pests and diseases of apples, pears, cherries, plums, peaches and apricots will be discussed.
The following will be included in this workshop:

How to determine if a problem is serious or not
How to identify insects, diseases, nutritional and other problems that damaged your trees and/or fruit this year and to prevent damage next year
How to control tree fruit diseases (cankers) that infect the trees at this time of year
How to interrupt the life cycle of some problem insects at this time of year (Codling Moths and Apple Maggots)
Organic spray and no spray approaches
Tools, equipment and materials for fall pest and disease management

Important Notes: This workshop will include an indoor presentation and outdoor evaluation of trees and crop in the UBC Food Garden. The outdoor session will go ahead rain or shine.

Instructor: Richard grew up on a small commercial orchard in the Okanagan Valley where his fascination with horticulture began. After completing a Plant Science degree at UBC he travelled through the South Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand for 2 years working on fruit farms, nurseries and visiting many agriculture research centers. Back in Canada he worked as a contract pruner, landscaper, and commercial tree fruit advisor before joining the BC Ministry of Agriculture as an Extension Horticulturist in 1979. With the Ministry he worked as a production advisor to the Tree Fruit, Christmas tree, agroforestry and specialty crop sectors across the province. Since retiring in 2010 he has been developing a business focused on teaching home gardeners, institutions and small land owners about tree fruit culture, espalier tree training, bonsai, grafting and organic pest and disease control. Most of his work is one-on-one consulting and training of home gardeners. He is a Registered professional Horticulturalist and a Certified Arborist.

Cancellation & Refund Policies: UBC Botanical Garden reserves the right to cancel any workshop or reduce the number of instructional hours, should the class not reach 25% capacity 5 days before the class. In the event that a course is cancelled, UBC Botanical Garden will offer the option of transferring to another course, or obtaining a full refund. All cancellations must be made at least 5 working days before the start of the course by contacting garden.programs@ubc.ca. A $15 processing fee is charged for cancellations. There is no fee for transferring the registration to another person.
