Event Details

RIC Centre hosts Growing Your Business seminars to help entrepreneurs fast-track the commercialization process and gain business insights. September's seminar will focus on the topic of Product Design & Development.  With today's fast-paced growing market of technology products and growing businesses, the design and development can be under appreciated through the focus points of creativity, ergonomics, and human values. Great design is as much about taking away as it is about adding to a structure, a product, an idea or a concept. Overall, the major driving force for success is at the intersection of design and experience.

Date: Thursday September 4th, 2014
Time: 7:00am – 10:00am
Venue: Xerox Research Centre of Canada (Pake Auditorium)
Address: 2660 Speakman Drive, Mississauga ON

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Joseph Cafazzo

Lead, Centre for Global eHealth Innovation
Senior Director, UHN Healthcare Human Factors
Associate Professor, University of Toronto

Dr. Joseph Cafazzo is Lead for the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, a state-of-the-art research facility devoted to the evaluation and design of healthcare technology, hosting seventy researchers and staff.

As a biomedical engineer, he has spent his entire career in a hospital setting. By observing healthcare delivery from the inside, he works on ways to keep people out of hospital by creating technologies that allow for self-care at home. At the same time, Joe and his team are the biggest critics of poorly designed health technologies and their ineffectiveness. He surrounds himself with whip-smart, and passionate engineers and designers who are creating technologies that are spirited, modern, people-focused, and truly improve the patient experience.

He is an associate professor at the University of Toronto, in the areas of clinical engineering, human factors, and health informatics and is the recipient of the Career Scientist award by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

In his 20-year career in commercializing new technologies, Ferhan has secured a total of over $30M in funding from boards and captured three new and previously unserved markets resulting in tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

Since 2011, Ferhan has worked with University of Toronto, University Health Network, MaRS, McMaster University and Innovation Factory, as well as a number of incubation institutions and private clients, as an executive-in-residence, mentor, coach and business advisor.Currently, Ferhan is the CEO of Acumyn Inc., a life sciences company he spun out of Princess Margaret Hospital, University Health Network. He is also the creator and lead instructor of University of Toronto’s Business Innovation Certificate offered via the School of Continuing Studies.

Dylan Horvath, CEO, Cortex Design Inc.

Dylan is the owner and director of Cortex Design Inc. Dylan's firm helps deliver compelling user-experiences with the complex products they design. Dylan holds a Systems Design Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo (B.A.Sc. 1997).

At Cortex, we visualize human experiences, design the products to support them and manufacture the solution. We believe that a designer's most important job is to connect with people and create products that enrich their lives. Good design is not about designing objects, it's about designing stories. And good stories are good business.

The projects we take on tend to include gaming and wearable technology, 3-D scanning, imaging and printing, and medical devices. Cortex Design's current projects include The Bubl Cam, Matter and Form 3D Scanner and the Cloud DX Tricorder (currently in the running for the XPRIZE).
