This workshop will be given by Simon Nderitu, an HPC analyst working at McGill HPC, Calcul Québec.

Participants will learn the basics of how to use the Linux operating system to interact with a high-performance computing cluster. Topics include using the command-line to navigate directories and edit files, automating tasks with scripts, managing running processes, compiling software, and using graphical interfaces.

  A: Depending on your operating system:
  1. Linux: find the built-in terminal application
  2. Mac OS X: find the built-in terminal (Apple key + Space, type "terminal")
  3. Windows: install Cygwin, PuTTy+Xming or MobaXterm

Résumé

Dans cet atelier, les participants apprendront la base de l’utilisation du système d’exploitation Linux, et ce, afin d’interagir avec une grappe de calcul informatique de pointe. Les thèmes abordés seront l’utilisation de la ligne de commande pour parcourir les répertoires et pour éditer des fichiers, l’automatisation de tâches à l’aide de scripts, la gestion de processus, la compilation de programmes et l’utilisation de l’interface graphique.

  1. Linux: un terminal est généralement inclus avec une distribution Linux (accessoire ou outil administrateur)
