Arts & Events Programming at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites you to our fifth and final World Rhythms Performance Lecture of the fall term, “Made in China” - Repackaging Traditional Chinese Music.
Led by Mei Han, one of the world’s premiere zheng artists, the performance lecture will explore the westernization and modernization of traditional Chinese music and Chinese traditional instruments. Through live demonstrations and comparison of older forms of Chinese instrumental genres and modernized Chinese music, Mei Han will discuss how the essence of traditional Chinese music has been lost in this rapid modernization. Mei Han will also review the level of influence of Western classical music in traditional Chinese music and how highly westernized “traditional” music is packaged and sold to the West as authentic Chinese music.
The performance lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm in room AA 303 of the Arts & Administration Building at the University of Toronto Scarborough located at 1265 Military Trail. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
