Patent agents from Gowlings will explain efficient filing and patent procurement strategies, including:

  • Handling the initial stages of inventor disclosure submissions
  • Determining what is patentable
  • Knowing when and how patent professionals can assist you

Shahrzad Esmaili, Patent Agent, Gowlings

Shahrzad Esmaili is a registered Canadian and US patent agent in the Intellectual Property Group of Gowlings’ Toronto office, where she specializes in the area of patent prosecution.

Shahrzad has drafted and prosecuted patent applications relating to electrical and computer inventions in a variety of fields, including computer hardware and software, electronics, communication systems and biomedical devices. She specializes in telecommunication systems, handheld computing devices, visualization platforms, database management systems and network architectures. Shahrzad has conducted research on content-based audio watermarking and retrieval that has earned several awards within the CCECE, ICASSP and Micronet conferences. 


Grant Tisdall, Patent Agent, Gowlings

Grant Tisdall is a registered patent agent with both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He works with business owners to provide strategic advice and opinions on patentability aspects of their technology, freedom-to-operate considerations for their technology, and litigation support concerning patent infringement and validity issues. Grant advises his clients on the strategic global aspects of intellectual property and assists in the coordination of their R&D activities through building and managing intellectual property portfolios for their first/next generation technologies. He guides technology companies in developing customized innovation programs that best formalize their intellectual assets in alignment with their business direction.
