Johnnie Walker's Redheaded Stepchild Hits the Road!
A special ONE NIGHT ONLY performance in Toronto before embarking on cross-Canada tour
Nobody's Business Theatre, in association with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, is gearing up for a four-city Fringe festival tour of its hit production of Redheaded Stepchild with stops in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria. But before taking off, Toronto audiences have one more chance to catch everyone's favourite ginger in a gala fundraising performance at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
Playwright and performer Johnnie Walker charmed audiences at the 2010 SummerWorks Festival with the story of Nicholas, a 12-year-old with red hair whose dad just remarried, making him a redheaded stepchild. Literally. And tomorrow at lunch, the biggest boy in grade six plans to beat him up. Walker plays Nicholas; his ex-Jehovah's witness golf-pro stepmom, Mary-Anne; and his fabulous alter-ego and imaginary friend, Rufus Vermilion. The production, directed by Walker's long-time collaborator Morgan Norwich, received "NNNNN" from NOW Magazine, and was hailed by CBC Radio as "a terrific, moving and very, very funny production." Walker also received the 2010 Steam Whistle Emerging Artist Award at SummerWorks for his work.
Joining Nobody's Business Theatre for this special night will be musical guest Henri Fabergé, who will be performing a set after the play. A rock musician and collaborative artist, Henri recently completed performing his punk theatre series Heligoland Follies (a sequel to last year's Feint of Hart), which combined music, theatre, film, and comedy.
There also will be lots of other surprises and treats in store, including delicious Mexican-inspired snacks from Toronto Underground Market favourites Comida del Pueblo.
