What is Ladies Learning Code?

We're a not-for-profit startup based in Toronto who provide women (and men*) the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly computer programming and other technical skills through hands-on workshops. We're all about showing people that learning to hack can be fun!

*Men are welcome to attend workshops (and they do!), but we request that you bring with you an additional female learner where possible.

Why build iPhone apps?

Apple's latest iPhone 5 sales exceeded five million after it's first weekend and there are close to 400 million active iOS devices worldwide! Everyone knows someone with an "amazing idea" for an iPhone app. Maybe you have an idea of your own. Why not learn the skills to turn these ideas into reality?
This Introduction to iPhone App Development workshop will be a hands-on experience designed for absolute beginners looking to get their feet with native iPhone app development using XML, CSS and JavaScript instead of Objective-C. The final product? A To-Do app built and personalized by you! In order for this workshop to be beginner-friendly, we will be using the Appcelerator Platform

During this session, you'll learn to:
  • Develop an app for iPhone
  • Build your design using XML
  • Style your design using CSS
  • Control your app using Javascript
  • Save collections of items to your app's database
We'll also introduce you to the world’s largest open source mobile community so that you can continue learning at home. You'll be on your way to creating bold, beautiful, and transformative mobile experiences in no time!
Is this workshop for you?
This workshop has been designed for absolute beginners. If you know absolutely nothing about coding or computer programming, you’ve come to the right place! If you've previously attended an Ladies Learning Code workshop, you'll feel very comfortable and find great value in this workshop, so please join us!

What participants say about our workshops:

"I'm super impressed with the organizers and participants, and I think it's a really valuable initiative."

"[The best part of the workshop was] the positivity, helpfulness and eagerness to learn/teach of every person in the room."

"After years of teaching myself how to code, I wasn't sure how I'd find the collaborative experience of an LLC workshop - but it completely exceeded my expectations. The lead instructor was clear and thorough, and the volunteer instructors were always ready to throw new challenges at us the moment they saw we'd completed the current task. Solving a coding problem has always been exciting for me, but having a group of people equally excited about it was amazing!"

"[My favourite part was] the casual nature of things, and the fact that all the instructors walked around and helped out learners everywhere around the room - so I got to meet and talk to a bunch of people who were experienced and gain some perspectives."
