Scotiabank GenNext is excited to announce that our Week of Caring will be held from July 14 - July 21th, 2012.

See below a list of volunteer opportunities and their details:

 

 

Monday, July 16, 2012:

 

Meal Assistance Program

11:00am - 1:30pm

170 Jarvis St. (Jarvis/Shuter St)

Volunteers will be assisting kitchen staff and member volunteers to prepare the noon meal for the clients at Good Neighbours. Duties include meal preparation, set up, serving and clean up.  A tour and orientation of the history, philosophy, facilities and programs of the agency will also be provided.

 

 

Cleaning

9:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Orientation: 3036 Danforth Ave. (Danforth / Victoria Park Ave.)

Project location: 143 Stephenson Ave.

Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning windows, walls and cupboards in a senior home. 

Project will start with an orientation and overview of the agency at 3036 Danforth Ave (head office). The project will then take place at 143 Stephenson Ave. (walkable distance from the head office).

 

 

Tuesday, July 17, 2012: 

 

Lunch Prep & Servers

9:30am-1:00pm

962 Bloor St. W. (Bloor/Dovercourt)

Team will be responsible for helping in the kitchen to prepare and serve lunch to 200+ homeless and underhoused women attending our drop-in. Women volunteers only.

  

 

Wednesday, July 18, 2012:

 

O'Connor Food Bank

10:00 am - 1:00pm or 1:30pm - 5:00pm

1420 Victoria Park Ave. (Victoria Park/Eglinton Ave E.)

Volunteers needed to help with setting up and taking down the food bank area, receiving/re-packaging food delivery, sorting and packing hampers and distributing hampers to clients (afternoon shift only).  Please arrive 15 mins before your shift to allow for a short orientation.

 

 

Thursday, July 19, 2012:

 

Program Activities for Seniors

9:00 am - 12:30pm

188 Carlton St. (Carlton/Parliament)

Clients include frail seniors & adults with disabilities and individuals with dementia.  E.g. assisting clients with walking; escorting clients onto the agency buses, with staff, escort clients to or from the agency, actively participate in program activities and encourage clients to participate, interacting with clients.

 

English Conversation Circle

11:00am - 3:00pm

Orientation: 3036 Danforth Ave.

Project location: 2A Market Place (Danforth/Victoria Park)

We have a newcomer conversation circle which meets and allows newcomers to practice their English skills. Volunteers will participate in leading small groups in discussions and game playing which will encourage and support English grammar, to help increase participants vocabulary, and the understanding of concepts and idioms.

Project will start with an orientation and overview of the agency at 3036 Danforth Ave (head office). The project will then take place at 20 Trent Street within walkable distance from the head office.

 

 

Friday, July 20, 2012:

 

Gardening

9:00am - 12:00pm

34 Guildcrest Drive

Pull the existing weeds and plant some annuals to brighten up a group home.

 

Gardening

1:00pm - 4:00pm

50 Fairfax Cres.

Discarding dead plants, tilling the earth, putting new mulch down.

 

Lunch Service and Bingo Games

11:00am - 3:00pm

702 Kennedy Rd.

Assisting with serving lunch, clean-up, leading bingo games for clients.

 

 

Saturday, July 21, 2012:

 

 

 

Out of the Cold Homeless Shelters Program

5:00pm - 9:00pm.

23 Grange Rd (McCaul between Queen and Dundas).

University Settlement provides a yearlong weekend Out of the Cold program for up to 65 homeless individuals(men, women and couples) each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings through the winter.  This program includes dinner and breakfast, a bed, showers, internet access, recreational activities for clients and support services including information, referrals and case management services.  University Settlement would provide the opportunity for a group of volunteers to prepare, serve, clean up and share a meal with our homeless clients (dinner - 5:30- 9pm).  In addition, volunteers could provide activities in the form of games, arts and crafts, music or other entertainment to the clients after dinner is served.
