Fig Tree Foundation

The Fig Tree Foundation is a Calgary based initiative seeking to foster collaboration among people and organizations involved in International Aid and Development.

Our core principles are: Sustainability, Effectiveness, Collaboration and Transparency.

It is our view that International Development should be viewed not as a gift but as an investment. Whether an investment of time, money or focus, each should be viewed through the same prism of responsibility; a responsibility to stay informed, ensure accountability and retain a sense of ownership well beyond any single act of generosity or heartfelt spirit. Ours is a business of doing good. As such,

“We must be judged by the good we do, not merely our intentions in doing it.”

Sustainability: Any project or effort to aid others must have the ultimate goal of leading to anoutcome where such aid is no longer required. Intervention must come with an expiry date, afterwhich the results and efforts they inspired will persevere, even in the absence of what came before.

Effectiveness: All projects must have an outcome that makes a tangible difference to the people and communities they are attempting to affect. These outcomes should be objectively observable and of greatest value to the community themselves, for it is their necessity that must be the mother of our invention not the other way round.

Collaboration: We are not a competitive industry. Our industry is one served best by those that would work together, share resources and experiences in the pursuit of a common goal rather than singular glory.

Transparency: We should share fully of our methods, failures and successes. It is only through the sharing of this knowledge that we can truly be accountable and that others, as well as ourselves, can better learn those lessons necessary for success.
