Kalmunity Vibe Collective

The thundering beats and earthy tones of the city's most accomplished musicians, laced with fiery lyrics of inspiration from revolutionary poets, singers, MCs, and lyricists

Kalmunity Vibe Collective is a grassroots live music concept composed of poets, singers, MCs, dancers and musicians. The collective was founded in 2003 by Music and Creative Director, Jahsun and since Kalmunity has grown into one of the largest artistic collectives in Canada. Their performances are unique live experiences created through spontaneous composition also known as “Live Organic Improv”. Their musical style blends flavors of R&B, hip-hop, afrobeat, funk, reggae, soul and jazz. The lyrics reflect diverse perspectives and tell the stories of the voiceless offering an alternative to the mainstream. The result is incredibly creative, original music that is rich with cultural, spiritual and social content expressed in the moment. Kalmunity’s unique approach to music has both astounded and inspired their consistently growing audience.

Since its inception at Montreal’s Sablo Kafe, the Kalmunity Vibe Collective has been devoted to high-quality musicianship and creative professionalism. The consistency of the Tuesday night series has created a large network within Montreal's artistic community and abroad. They also have developed successful artistic and cultural events throughout the city like the Intimate Sky performance series, Kalmunity Jazz Project Sundays, the Kalmunity Black Liberation Month Series, the Kalmunity Music and Poetry Workshop Program and our original series, Live Organic Improv Tuesdays. Kalmunity continues to play an active roll in the community by participating in a number of benefits, youth mentoring and artistic workshops.

Kalmunity has released an anthology of works called The Talking Book, they have been featured in several live radio broadcasts and placed second in CBC’s Digital Diversity Short Film Competition for the short film "Jahsun". Kalmunity has been consistently nominated in the Best of Montreal for several music categories for several years and has been named the best spoken word night 3 times. Kalmunity performed at Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, released two live recordings and continues their two successful weekly series. Kalmunity is now known as a musically innovative super group bringing improvisation into the forefront of modern live music.
