The School of Health Services Management, Ryerson University
The Health Services Management (HSM) program option was first offered at Ryerson University in fall of 1993 as a part-time degree completion program through the Chang School of Continuing Education. The HSM program, a joint venture with the Faculty of Community Services, was the first undergraduate program of its kind in Canada specifically designed to assist healthcare professionals interested in advancing into management positions in health service organizations. Unlike traditional undergraduate programs, the Health Services Management part-time degree-completion program offered courses that built on its students’ existing base of practical knowledge of the healthcare field.
In July 1995, the program was formally transferred from the Continuing Education Division to the Faculty of Community Services. In 1999, its administrators proposed adding a Health Information Management (HIM) program option. It began accepting students in September 2003.
