West of Hell is a heavy metal band that was formed in 2002 in West Auckland, New Zealand by Ivan Vrdoljak and Andrew Hulme . Sean Parkinson (ex-Sinate) joined shortly there after. Jordan Kemp was enlisted to take up bass duties .As an instrumental band West of Hell was quickly outgrowing New Zealand, all they needed was a frontman. In 2009, the four members uprooted their lives and moved to the other side of the world to Vancouver, B.C., Canada . The band played a series of shows as a four-piece instrumental, drawing critical acclaim, and attracting the attention of the local metal community. The exposure led them to Zimmers Hole frontman Chris “The Heathen” Valagao. They hired producer and Juno Award winning engineer Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, GWAR, Zimmers Hole, Gene Hoglan, Fear Factory) with whom Valagao had worked with on previous projects. In late 2010, they began work on Spiral Empire at The Factory Studios in Vancouver.Spiral Empire was released in 2012 on Reversed Records , followed by a tour in New Zealand and extensive touring in Canada . Ivan Vrdoljak was forced to return to New Zealand in 2010 shortly after recording .Many guitar players tried to fill Vrdoljak shoes until Kris Shulz Joined the band in 2014 . Andrew Hulme also returned to New Zealand in late 2014 .Immigration Canada does not recognize a music career as grounds for landed status .Matt Moder and Brian Newbury assumed the drum throne in Hulmes abscence .The band released a string of behind the scenes videos from tour ,produced by Andrew before his deportation . Chris Valagao being a cinematographer and SPFX artist produced and directed the bands first two videos for "Faceless the Droids" and "Water of Sorcery" . West Of Hell's new album "BLOOD OF THE INFIDEL" was recorded at Armoury Studios in Vancouver B.C. (INXS,KISS,YES ,AC/DC,Aerosmith,Stone Sour,Strapping Young Lad) with Ash Pearson on drums (Revocation,Three inches Of Blood) and Infinity Studios in Victoria B.C. Produced again by Rob(Chicken)Shallcross and Mastered by Greg Reely(Fear Factory,Strapping Young Lad,Paradise Lost,Devil Driver,Darkest Hour,Bleeding Through,Overkill and Three inches Of Blood). The new album is definatley an evolution of the form . The debut release was a very power/classic metal offering , while "Blood of the Infidel"seamlessly incorporates elements of thrash, death, tech, and classic metal . Valagao has produced and directed two more videos for the bands upcoming new release .The title track "Infidels" and the first single "Hammer and Hand" . Many more Videos and behind the scenes shorts are in the works . 2018 holds several festival dates and a tour in Mexico and Europe in the fall. West of Hell ''Spiral Empire'' Reviews: Metal heads young and old are gonna want to check out Spiral Empire, the debut disc from Canadian metaless, West Of Hell. These guys skillfully combine huge amounts of old-school metal influences with a more modern day approach and the result is totally off the chain. -Puregrainaudio.com Andrew Hulme's drums also sound fantastic ― the cymbals are bright and the rest of the kit is dynamic and muscular. West of Hell are talented musicians and this strength is an integral part of their songwriting, demonstrating the skills they learned while playing for years as an instrumental group -Exclaim.ca There are some really great moments on this that make you go “No fucking way!” with very little dips in the overall standing of the record. I think this record might even contend for a potential spot in my top 20 for 2012. We’ll just have to wait and see what everyone else has to say. -Lukesreviews.wordpress.com Spiral Empire is a damn fun throwback to a better time in metal and West of Hell is a damn fun band. Their energy is infectious, their riffs are daring and “The Heathen” is every bit the old school warlock he needs to be to lead this fiery unit into the abyss and back again. -Blindedbysound.com West of Hell say no to all the posers that have spreading filth and low quality offerings throughout the worldwide Metal scene. “Spiral Empire” is where the fist of Thrash meets the quality melodic features and the emotional truthfulness of Heavy Metal. This release truly warmed my heart; I banged my head with craze but also enjoyed a great lyrical line and was impressed by the eminence skills of the entire lineup. West of Hell is probably the answer to south of heaven, however whether it is or not, I will be waiting for the next outcome. Metal-temple.com
