Event description

What’s the most difficult part to writing a novel?

Having the discipline to actually finish it!

Writing a novel is a huge project. No one just sits down and cranks one out without putting a lot of thought and planning into it and, most importantly, getting down to the business of writing on a regular basis.

But if you’re willing to commit to spending an hour or two every day writing, then I can help you get your first novel draft completed in about 10 weeks.

My 10-week Introductory Novel Writing Course is based on the popular and successful Evan Marshall Novel Writing Plan. In fact, I use it as a text book and guide to follow because I think it’s the best way for a beginning writer to prepare a successful manuscript.

Here’s what we cover:

Week 1: Finding your perfect novel and how to shape a story idea

Week 2: Create your lead character and supporting cast

Week 3: Plotting the way the pros do

Week 4: Interweaving story lines

Week 5: Surprising the reader

Week 6: Ending on all the right notes

Week 7: Putting it all together

Week 8: Mastering action, summary and dialogue

Mastering feelings, thought and background

Week 9: Completing the draft

Week 10: Editing and the final touches

This is an in-class course held weekly at Carleton University, Ottawa. To take the same course online from anywhere in the world, click here.

In-class time is a mix of teaching the above writing strategies and showing real-life examples of how they work. We will also spend time writing in class so you’ll have a chance to ask questions as you encounter them. The focus of this course is on getting your novel written rather than on workshopping and critiquing each other’s stories, but if there’s a learning opportunity, we will take it.

My role is to coach you through the novel-writing process, give you constructive feedback and challenge your assumptions. I will hold you to account so that you get your first draft done. I will help you develop your story idea, characters and plotting so you have a clear roadmap to follow.

So… are you up for the challenge? Can you see yourself as a writer with your own finished novel? Sign up today!
