WORLD'S LARGEST DJEMBE DRUM CIRCLE
~ 1000 DJEMBE FOLA ~

Organized by African Drums & Art Crafts
Presented in Association with AFROFEST

Toronto will be making drum history this year! Honouring the work of Saikou from African Drums & Art Crafts and his 20 years contributions to the drum community of the GTA, this monumental day has been envisioned to celebrate our city's diverse rhythm family. It will also be a unique way to celebrate AFROFEST's 30th anniversary -- by attempting to break a world record. This landmark event will be testament to the rhythm of our city, celebrating diversity, and a special day to unite ALL the drummers of the GTA and beyond in 1000+ person djembe drum circle.

SCHEDULE

9:00 am -10:30 am – Check In + Drum Rental pick-up
10:30 am - 12:00 pm – Intro Facilitation by African Master Drummers
12-12:30 pm – Play in unison for World Record Attempt

Toronto will need 1000 djembe players to surpass the previous record set by England! This record will require us to sustain a given drum beat pattern all in unity, for a small length of time. A short lesson by the African Drum Masters (Amadou Kienou, Mohamed Diaby, and Quammie Williams) will be given during the opening circle. This will be our day to shine as a rhythm community, calling together our diverse drum family in “The Sound of Thousand Drums.”

*Donations will help with the cost of running the event, and net proceeds will go to support Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Please make your reservations early to ensure a drum and royal seat for you on this historic day!

* We need all support we can get! Volunteers greatly appreciated.

African Drums & Art Crafts

African Drums and Art Crafts is proprietor Saikou's international cultural hub where he has been a pioneer and veritable cultural ambassador in bringing African culture to Toronto since 1987. Saikou’s store, a hub for drummers in Toronto, is where Saikou provides quality imported hand carved authentic African Drums, Music Lessons, Drum repair services, African Clothing and Art Crafts. Saikou has inspired a lively impromptu grassroots no-stage African village style drum & dance circle at AFROFEST beside his Booth each year since its inception in 1989. For many Drummers & Dancers this Village Circle is an annual AFROFEST highlight. Saikou’s skill, commitment and tireless efforts to serve the community have earned him the respect as the “go to guy” for Drummers, artists, event producers, community members, educators and tourists alike. Saikou is bringing the community together to share in making this historical event a reality while having fun and supporting a good cause - Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF)
