10th Annual Real Estate Industry Night
Event Information
About this Event
The University of Alberta Real Estate Club and Real Estate Program are proud to bring you the 10th Annual Industry Night. Industry Night provides a chance for industry professionals and students to network regarding firms, the industry, and different real estate career paths. The event will take place via Zoom on February 4th, 2021.
While this is our first virtual Real Estate Industry Night, it is also the 10th Annual. Our keynote speaker for the evening is Graeme Young. Graeme Young has been involved with the Real Estate Program since its inception in 2011. He played a critical role in determining the vision for the Program and pulling together the industry resources to endow the Stan Melton Chair in Real Estate. It is appropriate that on this 10th anniversary of the first Industry Night, Graeme’s contribution to the industry and to the Real Estate Program receive well-deserved recognition. Kevin McKee and Darren Snider, both longtime colleagues of Graeme will be joining us to share some of their insight regarding Graeme’s role over the years.
Graeme T. G. Young B.Sc (Estate Management), F.R.I.C.S.
Graeme Young has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Estate Management from the Faculty of Economics, University of London and is a retired Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Graeme came to Canada and worked from 1967 to 1978 with Knowlton Realty Ltd. in their Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton offices. From 1971 to 1978, Graeme was in charge of the Edmonton branch and latterly was a Vice President of the company. From 1979 to 1996 Graeme was President and General Manager of Graeme Young and Associates. Through a merger the company became Avison Young Commercial Real Estate, a commercial and industrial real estate agency specializing in sale, acquisition, leasing and real estate consulting with office throughout North America and selected cities in Europe. Graeme is a former National Chairman and continued his active responsibilities in Alberta until his retirement in 2009. Graeme has extensive experience in all of the above-mentioned fields and has handled many of the largest sale transactions in the Edmonton market. Graeme is currently a director of Jaycap Trust and Jaycap Financial Ltd. and is on the Advisory Board of the Real Estate Program at the University of Alberta.
Kevin McKee, CEO, Pangman Development Corporation
As a child, Kevin was fascinated by the complexity of building and construction. That childhood fascination eventually led him to establish his own company, Pangman Development Corporation. Kevin’s career in real estate development began in 1991 when he joined Avison Young after earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. Following 13 successful years at Avison Young, Kevin joined WAM Development Group, where he was responsible for projects totalling $525 million. In early 2010, Kevin left WAM to focus solely on Pangman Development Corporation, which he’d founded in 1996. A lifelong Edmontonian, he saw an opportunity in the market for a professional development company focused on projects that transform how people experience the city he loves.
Darren Snider, Principal, Avison Young
A Principal at Avison Young with close to 35 years of experience, Darren has become one of the leading producers with the company. During 1996-2005, Darren completed over 4,000,000 square feet of leasing and/or acquisition retail transactions in Western Canada. Since 2005, Darren has completed approximately 100 land transactions totalling approximately 8000 acres in the Edmonton area. Darren’s wealth of experience includes project leasing, land sales and tenant mandate work for many of the leading firms in the industry. He obtained his B.Com degree from the University of Alberta in 1986 and welcomes the opportunity to participate in retail and real estate related activities at the U of A. Darren is a member of ICSC and is actively working towards building the Real Estate Program within the U of A School of Business.
The evening event begins with remarks from Graeme, Darren and Kevin followed by three sequential breakout sessions where students and industry guests have an opportunity to interface in small groups. This evening offers an opportunity for students to begin to build their network and learn more about real estate firms and the industry, important stepping stones to launching their careers. Over the past nine years, this annual event has created many strong relationships and this year will be no exception!
