BC announced the appointment of Dr. Daniel Vigo as B.C.’s chief scientific advisor for psychiatry, toxic drugs and concurrent disorders.

DESCRIPTIONIn June 2024, BC announced the appointment of Dr. Daniel Vigo as B.C.’s chief scientific advisor for psychiatry, toxic drugs and concurrent disorders. Dr. Vigo provides the government with evidence-based recommendations on how to improve care for this new, growing group of patients who are living with a combination of severe mental-health and addictions challenges, as well as brain injuries. In September 2024 , Premier David Eby announced that the B.C. government would open "highly secure" facilities to house people detained under the Mental Health Act. Dr. Vigo will clarify the scope and expected impact of his recommendations, the rationale for making high quality care available especially for people whose level of severity and/or acuity renders them unable to engage with care voluntarily, as well as the risks and limitations of this strategy.PRESENTERDr. Daniel Vigo is a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, and public health specialist, originally from Argentina. He is currently an Assistant Professor at UBC, a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School, an Advisor to PAHO and WHO, as well as the Chair of the Services and Policy Workgroup of the WHO-World Mental Health Surveys Initiative. He is also the Regional Lead Psychiatrist for Assertive Community Treatment for the Province of BC and the incoming Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mental Health Systems.He has worked in clinical, research, teaching, and leadership positions across both the public and private sector.ZOOMThis event will be delivered on Zoom.
