Contact Printing

For the uninitiated, a contact printer is a device for the controlled exposure of a negative (typically) onto an unexposed print stock while pressed in contact with one another. Once exposed, the print stock is developed as a positive of the original negative, producing an image of unparalleled quality and sharpness compared to all other methods of reproducing a motion picture image.

The Bell & Howell Model C, introduced in the 1960s, has many excellent features for 'striking' both black & white and colour prints, and is considered – even to this day – to be one of the premier contact printers.

In this workshop, the basic workflow for the operation of the printer will be covered, including how to prepare films for contact printing, how to thread and run the printer, how to accurately calibrate and manipulate colour, and 'time' a print to achieve the best results.

Workshop Outline

This workshop introduces participants to the Model C, the industry standard 16mm contact printer. The class will cover:

  • Prepping negative for printing
  • Lab films and handling
  • Threading and operation of the printer
  • Colour grading / timing
  • Creative printer applications
  • Hand processing print tests

The class will provide all you need to know to be able to print and process your own 16mm colour projection prints from negative. But that's just the start! With the Model C, not only can you create workprints, but also internegatives, interpositives, you can add optical soundtracks and make release prints. With a speed of 180 feet per minute you can work efficiently and the system enables you to freely edit on film and experiment with your project... all with the wide latitude of the print film!

Finally, if you become a Cineworks member this class is a must if you want to print 16mm and allows you to rent time on the Model C for use in your own projects (we have two: one for 16mm and one for 35mm).
