Event Information
Description
Join Princess Cinemas and other theaters across the USA and Canada as we watch the film version of '1984' together on April 4th, the same day that George Orwell's novel opens with protagonist, Winston Smith, jotting down thoughts in a forbidden diary.
April 4th - 7:00 at the Orignal. Regular admission.
Proceeds from each ticket will be donated to Amnesty International and PEN Canada.
Orwell's portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies, has never been timelier. The endeavour encourages theaters to take a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as 'alternative facts.'
About 1984, the film:
-------------
In a dystopian 1984, Winston Smith (John Hurt) endures a squalid existence in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania under the constant surveillance of the Thought Police. Winston works in a small office cubicle at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history in accordance with the dictates of the Party and its supreme figurehead, Big Brother.
Winston is an everyman who keeps a secret diary of his private thoughts, thus creating evidence of his thoughtcrime. His thoughts move to rebellion when he falls in love.
