Event description

Description

Doll's House is a three-act play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The play premiered on 21 December 1879 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The play is still significant and relevant for the way it deals with the fate women in our male dominated society. It questions the traditional roles of man and woman within a marriage. It aroused a great sensation and controversy at the time of its premiere and is still capable of stirring passionate discussions in a community such as the Tamil community in which the covenant of marriage is considered holy and sacred. But it should be noted that Ibsen based the play’s central plot on the life of one of his friends; and therefore its continued resonance with today’s audiences is a sad indictment of our society.

It is one of the world’s most translated plays having been translated into over 55 languages including Tamil. This production will be based on a translation done exclusively for Manaveli’s 19th Arangaadal by well-known dramatist P. Wickneswaran. He is also directing the play. He has skillfully managed to stay true to the original production for setting – which being Norway circa 1879, while speaking a language that is accessible to today’s audiences.
