February 8: Called to Faith Formation: Disgust and the Ethics of Empathy, led by Dr. Heather Looy
Christians are called to both hospitality (mercy, love) and holiness (purity, righteousness), a tension we see manifest in the expression "love the sinner, hate the sin." This tension is particularly clear in the arena of gender and sexuality which in Christian thought is most closely linked to purity and holiness. Faith formation involves, in part, navigating this tension. To do so, we need to understand the psychological processes that underlie the impulse to holiness and the impulse to hospitality. These processes are often incompatible, as one set helps us to erect and maintain boundaries while the other encourages us to cross or ignore them.
