Event Details

 Kids of Steel Triathlon:  Saturday July 18, 2015

Kids of Steel races are designed to introduce children to the sport of triathlon. During the race, the children complete a swim, bike & run. Distances for each discipline vary by age (as seen below). The main focus of the race is to encourage participants to do their best, have fun & finish.

Race Notes


  • Kids require a regular swim suit, bike, helmet & running gear. No other special equipment is required.
  • Kids in the 7 & under age groups ONLY are allowed parental help in the transition area.
  • Advice and Assistance on training and racing us available from race organizers.
  • All participants are encouraged to attend a pre-race meeting Friday night at 7 pm at the Athabasca Landing Pool.

Note: assistive devices may be used on consultation with race director


During the race:


  • Lifeguards and lapcounters will be on deck at the pool.
  • Volunteers will be in the transition area to assist racers.
  • The bike and run courses will be clearly marked and volunteers will be on site to assist racers and control traffic.
  • Drinks and snacks will be available after the race & all racers will receive a participation award.


Entry Deadline:

All registrations must be received on or before Friday, July 10th.

Friday July 17th

7:00 pm: pre-race meeting at Athabasca Landing Pool

7:15 - 8 pm: restration & race package pickup at Athabasca Landing Pool

Saturday July 18th

6:30 - 7:15 am: kids check in & body marking

7:45 am: pre-race briefing

8:00 am: swim starts


Parking is available one block north of the transition zone on 47th St and one block west of the transition zone at the 48th St parking lot.


Billy Loutit Triathlon / Duathlon

Sprint & Standard – Sunday July 19, 2015

Triathlon – individual or team event

Standard / Sprint:

Standard: Swim- 1500m / Bike- 40km / Run- 10km

Sprint: Swim- 500m / Bike- 20km / Run- 5km

Swim- 1500m (60 lengths) or 500m (20 lengths)

The swim will take place at the Athabasca Landing 25m pool (4705-48 Ave, Athabasca.  Volunteers will count laps and place a flutterboard in the water when 2 lengths remain. Please ensure that your estimated swim time is as close as possible to the time it will actually take you to complete your chosen distance. A wave number and start position will be assigned to you prior to the swim. Note: assistive devices may be used in consultation with the race director.

Bike- 40km or 20km

Standard(40km) bike course will travel from Athabasca Landing Pool west on 49th Ave to 51st St where they will turn north and travel towards Hwy 2. Cyclists will then cross traffic at the intersection of 51st St and Hwy 2 and travel west out of Athabasca on Hwy 2 towards Baptiste Lake. At Hwy 812, cyclists will turn south and proceed on Hwy 812 to the turnaround, which is 1.5km south of Twp Rd 662.

Sprint (20km) bike course will travel the same route as Standard, but will turn around at the intersection of Hwy 2 and Rge Rd 234 and return to the pool/transition area.

  • You will be travelling in mixed traffic so please use caution on the roadways, be respectful of other cyclists, and obey rules of the road.
  • Turnarounds will be clearly marked and complete with an aide station.
  • Drafting will not be permitted.
  • It is up to the participant to ensure that his or her bicycle is in proper working condition.
  • ANSI/SNELL/CSA approved helmets are mandatory.

Run- 10km or 5 km

Both standard and sprint runs start from Athabasca Landing Pool and travel 1km over pavement to the Muskeg Creek Trails and continue on the wide forested trails and rolling hills for the specified distance. Both distances will be marked and an aide station will be available.

Transition Zone

All transitions will take place outside the Athabasca Landing Pool. Bike racks will be supervised

Duathlon – individual or team event (2 or 3 person teams) 

Standard: See above for course details

Standard: Run- 5km / Bike- 20km / Run- 5km 

Entry Deadlines

Early bird registrations – received on or before Sunday, June 28th

All other registrations – received no later than Friday, July 10th 

Sunday      July 19th          6:00-6:30 am race package pick-up at Athabasca Landing Pool

                                         6:30-7:15 am: check-in & body marking

                                         7:45 am: pre-race briefing

                                         8:00 am: Triathlon swim / Duathlon run starts


Parking is available one block north of the transition zone on 47th St and one block west of the transition zone at the 48th Street parking lot.
