Event Details

Building strong, healthy communities is not easy. The decline of community life has been well documented, and is often related to stresses such as poverty, precarious work, juggling competing demands, and also as a consequence of suburbanization, increased home entertainment, higher rates of mobility and globalization. Many communities feel disconnected from public policy development and decision-making, resulting in lower voter turnout and cynicism about political accountability.

Socially vulnerable groups such as indigenous peoples, immigrants, refugees, racial/cultural minorities, and economically marginalized groups often find it difficult to participate effectively in political life. There are often challenges associated with attaining leadership roles in non-profit community organizations, through which community members can increase their involvement in policy development and decision-making. In this webinar we will identify barriers to civic engagement, and discuss strategies for supporting people from all walks of life to become involved, connected and engaged in their communities and local government.

This webinar is the third in a three part series on Civic Engagement. The first webinar of the series, "Engaging Citizens for Healthy Communities: Current Challenges and Approaches", was presented on October 20, 2015. The second webinar, "An Introduction to Engaging in the Review of your Official Plan", will be presented on February 24, 2016. All three webinars in this series are being recorded and will be available for viewing, along with slides and resource materials, on the HC Link website.
