Protect the Flows

Protect the Flows is the voice for businesses that rely on and support the Colorado River. Over 1,100 businesses in our network, from Main St. to Fortune 500 companies, support our efforts to promote common sense solutions to protect the river. We understand that smart water policies will keep enough water in the Colorado River Basin to support and sustain the environment, business, recreation and the overall quality of life in the region.

The Colorado River is the lifeblood of the Southwest contributing $1.4 trillion in economic benefits annually and 16 million jobs to the seven River Basin states. From farms to factories, the river allows a diversity of industries to locate in the arid Southwest. It also supports a $26 billion recreation economy and contributes to the high quality of life that attracts employees and families to the region. The river is a source of drinking water for 40 million people, supports food production on millions of acres of farmland, and produces hydropower to energize the region’s homes and businesses. Businesses cannot thrive in areas without sufficient water supply.

At BEF, we believe addressing the current state of our planet requires innovation, creative problem solving and discovering new ways of doing business that value the natural resources we depend on. We align your company’s goals with our extensive industry expertise to achieve immediate results today while helping solve tomorrow’s biggest environmental challenges.

We thrive on bringing game-changing ideas to market, including:
- Helping to start the voluntary Renewable Energy Credit market
- Creating the first voluntary Water Restoration Product
- Helping launch the first community-funded solar project in the nation
- Co-creating the Change the Course water sustainability campaign
- Building the nation’s most comprehensive K-12 renewable energy STEM education program

Thanks to purchases made by our partners, we have collectively kept a combined total of more than 9.5 million metric tons of carbon from the atmosphere, generated more than 6 million-megawatt-hours of clean energy, launched more than 250 renewable energy education projects across 20 states, restored 13.5 billion gallons of water to critically dewatered rivers and streams, and have supported the revitalization of 20 river ecosystems in seven Western states and Mexico.
