Event description

Description

Join us on Friday March 24th for our evening reception featuring Patrick Jarvis who will speak to: The Paralympic Movement: Personal Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future

Having discovered Paralympic sport late in his personal athletic life, Patrick Jarvis will share stories and
commentary on his journey as an athlete, administrator, volunteer and leader across the spectrum of the
Paralympic Movement over the last 25 years. A respite from data, theories and dissertations, this presentation
will be an anecdotal view of the Paralympics through one person's lens.

Patrick Jarvis

Professionally Patrick is a Petroleum Technologist with an Education degree, allowing him to learn a living to fuel his passion for sport and travel. He is a Paralympian (1992 – athletics) and has served in several key roles within Paralympic and Olympic sport for 30 years. The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games marked his direct involvement in twelve Paralympic and four Olympic Games since 1988. Based on his extensive involvement with the Paralympic Movement, he was named as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010.
His contribution includes serving seven years as president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and is in his third four-year term on the Governing Board of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Previously Patrick was a board director for VANOC (2010 Winter Games), University of Guelph, WinSport, LiFT and Own the Podium, and was a member of the IOC London 2012 Coordination Commission.

Still active in sports, including basketball, golf, and skiing, he ran the Boston 2011 Marathon as a fundraiser for para-sport development. Patrick is a native Albertan and although having spent time in over ninety countries, he continues to call Calgary home although currently commutes to Vancouver for his role as the Executive Director of Canada Snowboard.
