Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra
Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 8pm

Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University of Winnipeg

Curator: Jim Hiscott

An exciting and spectacular start to our season! The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, over 20-strong, brings together virtuoso musicians from around the world in new compositions for cross-cultural ensemble by Canadian composers-- including traditional instruments from China, Japan, India, Persia, Vietnam, Latin America, and Europe. VICO has been described as “a world music super-group” (Vancouver Sun), “music that sounds like Vancouver looks” (Georgia Straight), and “the United Nations of music” (CBC Radio). They present a whirlwind program of new and recent compositions by Lan Tung, Jennifer Butler, Farshid Samandari, Niel Golden, Jim Hiscott, Mark Armanini and others. Not to be missed!

Voice // Percussion
Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 8pm
Winnipeg Art Gallery

Curator: Michael Matthews

Sarah Jo Kirsch and Aiyun Huang are uncompromising yet flexible performers who can interpret diverse repertoire-- so their concert with musicians Dan Scholz, Micah Heilbrunn and Paul Williamson will be a special experience for our audience. Both Aiyun and Sarah have previously performed for GroundSwell with great success, and Curator Michael Matthews is keen on the idea of bringing them together. In this concert we feature music by Canadians Peter Hatch and James Harley, Americans David Cope and Jesse Jones, and a world premiere by Michael Matthews, a setting of remarkable poetry by Serbian-American poet Charles Simic. Aiyun Huang’s own exciting arrangement of Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre provides an excellent balance.

Génération 2018: ECM+
Thursday, November 8, 2018, 8pm
Centre culturel franco-manitobain

Curator: Gordon Fitzell

Get ready for the future!  Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM+) is crossing Canada from West to East with new works by some of Canada’s finest emerging composers.  The Generation 2018 Canadian tour, conducted by ECM+’s founder Véronique Lacroix, presents the latest edition of this legendary project with new works by Sophie Dupuis (NB/ON), Patrick Giguère (QC), James O'Callaghan (BC/QC) and Thierry Tidrow (ON/DE).  Meet the composers, the conductor and guest host Gabriel Dharmoo.  Hear electrifying performances that will stretch your musical imagination, then vote on your favourite pieces!

Lumières noires
Sunday, January 20, 2019, 8pm
Winnipeg Art Gallery

Guest Curator: Örjan Sandred

Think you’ve heard everything?  How about the vocal styles of a fictional culture, or the undefinable boundaries of a 3-dimensional musical space? GroundSwell is pleased to bring two celebrated Swedish musicians, Jonny Axelsson (percussion) and Fredrik Söhngen (oboe) to Winnipeg to collaborate with local musicians Allen Harrington, Oleg Pokhanovski, and Sarah Jo Kirsch for a rare performance.  Lumière noires offers wild virtuoso instrumental and vocal performances fused with electronic sounds to create unique and evocative musical soundscapes.

Made in Canada
Thursday, April 25, 2019, 8pm
Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, University of Winnipeg

Curator: Diana McIntosh

We all know Diana McIntosh as an adventurous composer and performer. Her intrepid spirit also embraces the rugged landscape as an avid hiker and mountain climber, spending time exploring the road-less-travelled in all corners of our beautiful homeland.  Made in Canada explores and celebrates this country’s wonderful and diverse features: its lands, peoples, cultures, prairies, lakes, rivers, wildlife and northern wilds.  Hear rugged Canadian music by Scott Jodoin, Diana McIntosh, Robert Turner, Ken Nichols and Sir Ernest MacMillan played by some of Canada’s finest musicians.
