Calling All Systems Change Leaders!

The 2018 Kumvana Gala brings industry, student leaders, government and non-profits together to exchange ideas and find inspiration. Gather with over a hundred systems change leaders from diverse backgrounds in a networking setting with canapés and drinks to celebrate people striving to improve the world and eliminate poverty.

This year, EWB's Kumvana Fellow, Gladys Muthara, will be sharing her struggle and successes in founding Teen Action Program Africa. TAP Africa works with teenagers by encouraging them in addressing social challenges in their communities, with the aim of nurturing them into young social change agents. She is the fifth female in her village to ever attend university, putting herself through school.

We will be joined by Minister of Status of Women Stephanie McLean, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as the Member for the constituency of Calgary-Varsity on May 5, 2015, and is also Minister of Service Alberta. Ms. McLean is passionate about social justice, health care, advanced education, women’s rights and consumer protection. She and her husband Shane, as well as their son Patrick, are residents of Calgary-Varsity.

Our lead sponsor is the British Consulate-General Calgary. Promoting global gender equality is a key priority for the UK Government - empowering women and girls through the Government’s work and aid programme improves peace and stability, economic growth and poverty reduction. Come listen to British Consul-General Caroline Saunders share more about the approach for gender equality across the Commonwealth.

We will also have our local self-proclaimed “Indigeneer”, Deanna Burgart P.Eng, CET. Deanna is President of Indigenous Engineering Inclusion Inc. and spent nearly two decades working in the energy sector in operations, sustainability, and risk management. Her passions are focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) outreach, particularly for Indigenous youth and young women, and she believes that empowering more diversity in STEM will solve our world’s greatest challenges.

This year's gala will celebrate gender diversity and women's empowerment throughout society. Other speakers and several organizations showcasing their work in this domain will be present as well.

Our goal is to fundraise for EWB's overseas ventures, just like the Kumvana Program, that celebrates young African leaders and brings them to Canada to help them further accelerate the social changes they're driving forward.

The evening will include food, wine, a silent auction, prizes, and plenty of networking opportunities.

Take advantage of early bird ticket prices until January 1, 2018. For sponsorship opportunities, please contact calgary@ewb.ca.
