2018 PIECES OF MIND MENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE

"Culture and Mental Health"

At the intersection of culture and mental health lies a wealth of unique experiences, stories, and knowledge for us to explore. This October, we will delve into the relationship between culture and mental health and learn how they can impact one another. Indeed, considering how culture plays an integral role in shaping our notions of health, illness, and even our coping or help-seeking behaviours, this conference theme offers important insights for our conversations around mental health. With an increasingly diverse student population and more international students on our campuses than ever before, this topic is both timely and relevant for our KPU community.

Cultural Info-Fair

From cultural performances to interactive activity stations and a chance to sample various comfort foods from around-the-world, conference participants are invited to join in on all the fun and festivities at our Cultural Info-Fair! Various on campus and community organizations whose work entails supporting individuals from specific cultural groups or who offer services related to mental health and well-being will be there for conference attendees to connect with during the Info-Fair. Whether they engage with these organizations or try their hand at some of the activities, conference attendees will be able to receive stamps for their “Passport to POM”. The more stamps one collects, the more entries one will have to put towards the big raffle draw in which several prizes will be given away, ranging from self-care baskets to gift card cards and technological devices!

Speaker Series

Our speaker series will include a range of diverse individuals whose personal and professional experiences will shape our discussions at POM and offer deeper insights into the interconnected nature of culture and mental health. To start, we have two student speakers who will share their lived experiences with mental health, particularly around how their cultural context might have posed challenges or perhaps served as a supportive factor in their journey to wellness. A panel discussion will follow, during which the panelists will answer questions about their work in the mental health field and as time permits, interact with the audience. To close our conference, we are honoured to have Dr. Alanaise Goodwill as our Keynote Speaker. Dr. Goodwill is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University whose background involves bridging psychology and Indigenous studies while prioritizing the mental health needs identified by Indigenous communities.
