The Reel Ideas program enriches the vision of Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival by synthesizing industry and education. Our programming aims to provide networking and skill-sharing opportunities between emerging talent, visiting artists and established filmmakers. It is our ongoing mandate to nurture the growth of Asian creatives within the arts and film at large and to explore in nuanced ways the multiple aspects of Toronto’s entertainment industry!

This interactive panel begins with a moderated panel with development executives and producers discussing tips and insights on how to successfully pitch film projects. Emerging filmmakers will also get an opportunity to pitch their project ideas to the panel and receive immediate feedback on how to make their pitches more efficient and effective!

New media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram are now powerful enough to shape career pathways, and allow emerging creatives to forge new ways for themselves in all kinds of industries. Featuring a dialogue with new media in a variety of fields creators and film industry professionals, this session explores how we can mobilize these platforms to build opportunity, navigate the nuances of new media, and offer practical tips to begin and sustain a career by harnessing the power of digital influence.

Remappings explores the documentary form as a means of remapping stories of traversals and settlement and as direct interventions into media representation. Some questions explored on this panel of documentary filmmakers include: How does the documentary form lend itself to self-reflexive storytelling, explorations of identity, and centring marginalized narratives? What are the stakes involved in telling these stories? How do you navigate truth-telling in these personal events as an outsider to the narrative?

What are some insights on making the leap from short film format to feature film production? How is creative process consistent or different from medium to medium and what is the draw of multidisciplinary work?
