Join the University of Waterloo's Water Institute for their 2018 RBC Distinguished Lecture* on Monday, September 24, at 5:00 p.m. Professor Mark van Loosdrecht, 2018 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate will present, "The Future of Water: Innovation, Resource Recovery, and the Blue Economy."

*Note: This lecture is part of the Water Institute's Water Research Conference.

Biography

Professor in Environmental Biotechnology Mark van Loosdrecht has spent more than twenty years working on improvements to the natural breakdown and reuse of waste materials. In March 2018, he was awarded the 2018 Stockholm Water Prize for revolutionizing water and wastewater treatment. His research is characterized by the combination of scientific understanding of complex systems and development of new processes. Professor van Loosdrecht’s scientific interests are mainly related to biofilm processes, nutrient conversion processes and the role of storage polymers in microbial ecology. In particular, he is interested in new processes related to wastewater treatment and resource recovery. His research has resulted in several processes currently applied on full scale such as the Sharon process, Anammox process and Nereda process. He is Editor-in-Chief of Water Research and has published over 600 scientific papers, has 15 patents and has supervised over 50 PhD students.
