Event Details

Join us for this year's CSHP-BC Branch Clinical Symposium! It will be an exciting night with a delicious buffet dinner and dessert, 3 educational topics and engaging speakers, and an opportunity to network.

5:00-6:05pm: Registration / Buffet Dinner

6:05-6:15pm: Welcome and Introduction

6:15-7:00pm: New Frontiers in Depression Treatment

Dr. Jackie Siu, BSc (Pharm), ACPR, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist - Tertiary Mental Health and Substance Use Programs, Vancouver General Hospital

Depression is recognized by WHO as the leading cause of disability worldwide and there is an urgent call for policy makers and clinicians to address mental health issues. As we approach a new age in mental health care, let’s look at current evidence-based approaches and recent innovations in depression treatment: from rapid-acting antidepressants to pharmacogenomics guided treatment.

7:00-7:30pm: Drug dosing in obese children

Dr. Roxane Carr. BSc, BSc (Pharm), PharmD, ACPR, BCPS, FCSHP, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC, Clinical Coordinator - Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of BC, Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services

Globally, the proportion of children who are obese has increased over the past two decades. There is very limited information and evidence to guide optimal dosing of medications in obese children. The appropriate method depends on medication specific factors including pharmacokinetics. During the session, an approach to dosing medications in obese and overweight children will be described and applied in the context of a patient case.

7:30-7:50pm: Dessert/Coffee/Tea and Networking

7:50-8:35pm: Monitoring of NOACs? Not a Bloodcurdling Experience

Dr. Erica Wang. BSc (Pharm), ACPR, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Cardiac Surgery, St. Paul’s Hospital

Did you think you were free from monitoring INR after ditching warfarin? Think again! There might be clinical scenarios where monitoring of NOACs might come in handy. This session will equip you with the knowledge and skills to be a NOAC monitoring expert. There might also be some time travel involved.
