Event description
"Fish Are Food" is a one-day conference: A cross-pollination between seafood, community and agriculture for healthy island food systems.

About this Event

**Please select the ticket option that matches your financial capacity. Reduced rate tickets are available for those in the non-profit sector, small business, or those on a fixed income, to increase the financial accessibility of this event. Purchasing a general admission ticket if you do not require the reduced rate to be able to attend will help ensure that we can make this conference affordable to as many people as possible. All tickets include lunch and light refreshments on the conference day.**

What is Fish Are Food? Food Connections 2019 is a call to discovery, collaboration, and action towards valuing fish as food. We are weaving a web of interconnections among fish harvesters, farmers, their communities, and food security champions working at the systems level.

What to Expect:

  • Keynote presentation by Jon Crofts of Codfathers Seafood Market and Slow Fish
  • Fish-are-food for lunch - your registration includes a catered lunch featuring regional seafood delights (non-seafood and vegetarian options available too), and light refreshments throughout the day
  • Break-out sessions with presentation topics including: Fish-friendly agriculture & land management; Research into innovative kelp aquaculture; An overview of T'aaq-wiihak Fisheries and their work on the ecology and sustainability of a co-managed commercial Ca?inwa (gooseneck barnacle) fishery; Processing, receiving and vending fish from an inspections and regulations perspective; 
  • Lots of opportunities for networking

Possible Extra-curricular Activities: We're working on organizing additional activities for the evening of November 28, and/or Friday, November 29. If you're interested in any of these, please email Lynnette@greenwaystrust.ca and we'll keep you posted as details become available .

  • Processing Facility Tour:  A tour of Walcan Seafood Ltd. (on Quadra Island) on Friday, November 29, probably late morning, about 1hr in length (+ travel time).  
  • Maritime Heritage Centre Tour: A guided tour through the exhibits at our conference venue (MHC). Friday November 29, 12pm.
  • Networking Dinner: November 28, after the conference, at a local fish+farm-to-table restaurant.

Accommodations: We are working to secure a discount on nearby accommodations for those attending the conference. Please email Lynnette@greenwaystrust.ca if you'd like to be notified of these details.

Chance to win free registration: We'll be giving away a refund on your Food Connections ticket to one lucky conference attendee who registers for both Fish Are Food and  the Good Food Summit (happening in Victoria on November 21).  Bring a copy of your GFS ticket to Fish Are Food to enter.
