2019 Film Selection and Screening Dates

October 2 | Our Time Machine | Documentary, Drama, Family | *Ottawa Premiere*

When influential Chinese artist Ma Liang (a.k.a. Maleonn) realizes that his father Ma Ke, an accomplished Peking Opera director, is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, he invites his father to collaborate on his most ambitious project to date - a haunting, magical, autobiographical stage performance featuring life-size mechanical puppets called "Papa's Time Machine". Through the creation of this play, the two men confront their mortality before time runs out and memories are lost forever.

Following the film there will be an Online Q&A with Director S. Leo Chiang.

October 16 | Still Tomorrow | Documentary, Biography

How one disabled farmer became China's star poet - A farmer from rural China with cerebral palsy is not a likely candidate for fame. But when Yu Xiuhua’s poetry went viral online, she was suddenly touted for great success. Brutally visceral, her poetry is born from grappling with disability, a loveless marriage, and her relationship with China’s eroding pastoral interior. This sympathetic doc lays bare the disjunction at the heart of Yu’s life between physical circumstance and inner expression.

Director: Fan Jian
