Playing with Professors: Are you Curious about LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Methods?

Get ready to take a deep dive into innovation and growth of LSP!

This day will start with Strategic Play Founder, Jacqueline Lloyd Smith, MA, MBA, (CMC) welcoming the group and presenting 'Current Trends in Adult Play', are you curious yet..?

Next, you can expect 15 minute 'Ted Talk Style' inspiring presentations from each professor followed by round table, deep dive discussions, and many moments of playful activities, video clips, and much more.

Who are the experts presenting this year? Well lucky us, we have three Canadians and two US experts with global experience and great stories to tell.

We will keep our minds engaged and hands on the bricks as we build and play with our professors:

This day will be full of deep-level learning. So get ready to build on your knowledge.

Here is the 2019 line up:

Richard Perez, General Manager P&G GYM Innovation Center (center photo)

Richard, a Mechanical Engineer, is an accomplished consumer product innovator with 27-year career leading cross-functional teams in new product development/engineering and marketing in North America (US/Canada), Latin America (Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile) and China. We first trained Richard at P&G in Venezuela in 2011 and we became fast friends. We have since worked with him in a multitude of capacities and on numerous projects. Richard and his team use LSP from everything to research and development to the creation of product stories. Are you curious about how one the worlds largest packaged goods companies (who have also named Strategic Play Group Ltd., Best in Class for our LSP training) is utilizing this powerful tool for innovation?

Belinda Heyne, Professor of Photochemistry and Photobiology University of Calgary (upper right photo)

Belinda graduated with a PhD degree in Science from the University of Liege (Belgium) in 2004. She then moved to Canada as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa. In 2007, she started her independent career at the University of Calgary in the Department of Chemistry and moved to the rank of Associated Professor in 2013. Her research work lies in photochemistry and photobiology, with a particular interest in the production of singlet oxygen to solve societal grand challenges. Belinda is also a passionate instructor who is constantly researching new approaches to teach abstract concepts in a more tangible fashion. In 2018, she discovered Lego® Serious Play® while attending the Inventors Conference in Calgary and was directly inspired by the power of metaphors. She was trained and certified in August 2018. Since then, she has successfully implemented “Lego® Tuesdays” in her lectures on Introductory Quantum Chemistry, helping undergraduate students grasp abstract knowledge while having fun in one of the most stimulating and demanding courses of their degree. If you are curious about how LSP can be used in higher education while working with challenging topics, Professor Heyene will have stories to tell.

Jason M. Trew, Lieutenant Colonel, PhD, United States Air Force (lower left photo)

Lt Col Trew is the commander, 30th Student Squadron, Squadron Officer School, Maxwell AFB, AL.

Lt Col Trew entered the Air Force in 1999 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Area Studies and Legal Studies with minors in Philosophy and Russian language. Following a one-year assignment as a “Gold Bar” recruiter, he completed Undergraduate Pilot Training and then F-15C initial qualification and mission qualification courses. Lt Col Trew has held various operational and training assignments in the United States and Central Command. While assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing, he was handpicked to fly combat air patrols over the National Capital Region during times of high alert, including the President’s 2004 State of the Union address. Lt Col Trew is a senior pilot with over 1200 flying hours in fighter and trainer aircraft. He completed Masters of Arts, Humanities (2011), a Master of Military Operational Art and Science, Air Command and Staff College (2012), Master of Philosophy, Military Strategy, School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (2015), and a Doctor of Philosophy, History (2018) and a Joint Coalition Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College (2019). So what does play have to do with all this? Jason's keynote will be on his research studies of the intersection between play and airmanship. Trained in LSP in early 2019, Jason has been instrumental in bringing LEGO SERIOUS PLAY into the US Air Force where it is now in play at the Officer Squadron School. Are you curious to learn more about where play and strategy intersect? And if you are lucky, he might tell us a few "Dad Jokes".

Kasra Khorasani, Psychiatrist, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. ( lower right photo)

Kasra (Kas) is a curious Psychiatrist and fan of LEGO® bricks pondered if LEGO could be used as a tool for therapeutic intervention and so he contracted the LEGO company in Denmark. LEGO then directed him to call Jacqueline Lloyd Smith, and the rest is history. He invited Jacquie to speak in Toronto at the Conference for Group and Psychotherapists and Psychoanalysts where he was introduced to the world of LSP. Kas took his Certification in 2018. He is interested in empathy, creativity, and interpersonal neurobiology. He is a Psychiatrist, Group Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst and Certified Lego Group Facilitator. He is on faculty in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, founder and director of TS Medical Centre in Toronto and past president of Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association. His current clinical focus is on developing LEGO® Group Therapy, a modification of LEGO® Serious Play, for use in the mental health settings. If you are curious about how LSP can be used as a therapeutic tool, or if you just want to know how your brain works on bricks, you will love this presentation.
