Event description

Description

Join YWCA Lethbridge on International Women's Day to celebrate our 2019 Women of Distinction!

YWCA Women of Distinction are women who, through their own initiative, ability and effort, have made an exemplary achievement in their field – women who are outstanding role models because of their goals and the way they have achieved these goals. Whether recognized as trailblazers in their field, or a young woman on the rise, all are pathfinders, bringing forth the key issues facing Canadian women.

Each year, YWCA Lethbridge & District honours Southern Alberta women who have made substantial contributions to the social fabric of our community in unique and individual ways in one of ten categories.

2018 Women of Distinction Award Recipients

About Jaime VandenBerg

Jaime VandenBerg was crowned Miss Earth Canada in August 2018 and went on to represent the country at the international Miss Earth Competition in the Philippines the following October. However, after arriving at the competition, Jaime weathered two weeks of sexual harassment and classic human trafficking control. When she could take no more, she took a stand against sexual harassment and withdrew from the competition. After returning to Canada, Jaime published An Open Letter to Anyone Who’s Been Sexually Harassed in Cosmopolitan Philippines to validate the feelings of anyone who has experienced sexual harassment and let them know they are not alone.

Join us on International Women’s Day to learn how Jaime leveraged her Lethbridge Victim Services Unit training and YWCA Lethbridge safety planning protocols to devise a plan and to escape.

Jaime VandenBerg was born in Lethbridge and is an avid volunteer. She is currently working on her combined degree at the University of Lethbridge with dreams of becoming a lawyer.
