Event Details

The 2020 BC Library Conference theme is Libraries, Democracy, and Action.

Libraries are uniquely able to support and maintain an inclusive and diverse society.  We provide staff, space, programming, and services to help individuals, families, groups, and communities maximize their potential for development and enhance their well-being.  As the author Eric Klinenberg put it in his book “Palaces for the People,” libraries provide the “setting and context for social participation” and are a cornerstone of civic life.

 

The conference theme “Libraries, Democracy, and Action” is meant to inspire discussions about how libraries continue to build robust social infrastructure and how libraries play a critical role in linking communities to essential thinking and action focused on areas such as reconciliation, inclusion, diversity, intellectual freedom, creative and critical thinking, and social responsibility.

 

The 2020 BC Library Conference theme provides an opportunity to share the ways libraries currently do this work, and to explore the ways we intend to broaden and deepen the contributions libraries make to society.

 

We are privileged to hold the 2020 BC Library Conference in the City of Richmond which is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəyəm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səlílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

FAQs

What does it mean if a session is greyed out?

A session is greyed out when the room is full. Each room has a maximum seating capacity and when the number of people registered for the session in that room reached capacity the session is greyed out.  

 

Can I register on behalf of someone else?

If registering for someone else please do only one registration at a time. Use your own information in the "buyer" section and your participant's information in the "attendee" section. PLEASE forward a copy of the confirmation you receive as buyer to your participant, as they do not receive full information automatically.

What is the refund policy?

Refunds are subject to a $75 cancellation fee. Request must be made in writing before April 1, 2020. Please allow up to 4 weeks for refund cheques to be processed. Credit card refunds may take up to 5 business days. 

 

Are there additional rebates for groups?

There is no group discount. By taking advantage of the Early Bird registration, institutions and indiviudals can save up to 15% on each registration. 

 

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

No. Registrations are not transferrable, and the name on the registration is the name that will be on your badge. If you've made a mistake on your registration, please provide full details in an email to bclaoffice@bcla.bc.ca please allow up to 4 business days for a response.

 

If I am speaking and have a coupon code, where do I enter it?

On the pop-up that shows the various registration rates, there is a link at the upper right that says “Enter Promotional Code”. Enter the code in the field that opens, and click Apply.

 

Why should I select my sessions? Does selecting my sessions mean a seat is reserved for me?

Selecting your sessions helps us assign our largest rooms to the sessions with highest attendance. Session selection does not guarantee a seat, so please plan to arrive in time to find a seat.

 

Once I've registered, can you switch my sessions for me?

Session selection is used as a guide for meeting room size allocations. You do not need to update your schedule and you may switch sessions on site on the day(s) that your registration is valid. Seating is on a first come, first seated basis.

 

Can I register on site?

Yes. On-site registration is subject to availability. Registration fees are at the Onsite Full-Conference rate. Payment by cash, cheque, and credit card is accepted on site; we are unable to process debit. A badge will be made for you when you register on-site. To be sure there is a place for you at the conference, and to avoid any delays while registering on-site, we strongly recommend that you register early, by April 1st, online.

 

Can I pay by cheque?

We prefer credit card payment if possible, but if you need to pay by cheque, please use these instructions: In the Payment section, choose Pay by Invoice. Complete all of the steps to register, and when you receive your confirmation, please print and mail a copy of this with your cheque. Please make your cheques payable to BC Library Association and ensure that payment arrives at BCLA by April 1, 2020. The confirmation you receive is Eventbrite’s only “invoice” and it may not be sufficient for your accounting purposes, which is one of the reasons we recommend credit card payments. Please use the Order Number as your Invoice Number.

 

Are the Wednesday Professional Development Institute sessions included in registration?

No  registration for the PDI sessions is on a separate form, and has a separate cost. Please visit bclaconnect.ca for more information as it becomes available. Registration must be completed by April 1, 2020.

 

Is the Awards Luncheon included in my registration?

The Awards Luncheon is taking place on Friday, April 17th and is included for all Full Conference registrations and Friday Only registrations. At this time, Luncheon Only tickets are not available for sale.
