Description

Competition Format

This is a “made in Canada” Simulated BVLOS Student UAS Competition. The purpose of the competition is to promote and develop Canadian expertise and experience in unmanned systems technologies at the university and college levels. Small unmanned vehicles are complex systems requiring a well planned and executed design and rehearsed operational approach. In addition, safety considerations are important factors in this competition as in any other vehicle design project.

Scenario

Rapid response times, and the ability to travel routes and distances that are not conveniently accessed by conventional methods, make Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) a promising medical delivery method. Applications of UAS for medical delivery include shuttling biological samples between facilities for testing, delivering medication to the homes and hospital rooms of patients, and reaching individuals in need of life-saving medical attention sooner than by ambulance. The possibilities UAS provide to the future of the health care industry have the potential to save time, resources and lives!

These possibilities are currently being tested in Canada and implemented across the world; from local emergency medical services teams promptly delivering defibrillators to individuals in cardiac arrest, to delivering otherwise inaccessible supplies, such as blood and vaccines, as Zipline (flyzipline.com) does in Rwanda and Ghana.

This competition will focus on the development of an Unmanned Aerial System capable of providing efficient deliveries for a company running medical clinics. The clinics run by this company are located in remote communities, which cannot be accessed easily by roads. Occasional deliveries need to be made to keep the clinics stocked as needs arise, and the company is looking for help to complete them!

The competition takes place in two phases. In the Phase I Technical Competition, teams complete a design paper describing the team approach and plans, due January 12, 2020 at 5pm EST. In the Phase II Airborne Competition, teams present themselves and conduct flying tasks as described later in this document. Phase II takes place May 1-3rd, 2020 in Southport, Manitoba. Teams will be graded on the quality and completeness of their design reports and the results of their flight demonstrations. There will be separate prizes for each phase.

Competition Payment

The above payment of $500.00 only covers your team registration fee. At a later date, another Eventbrite link will be set up to process your individual onsite registration fee of $250.00. The deadline for teams to register for the competition is November 8th.
