The Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies proudly presents the third annual CASIS West Coast Security Conference: The Shape of Contemporary Conflict on November 23-27, 2020. Its objective is to establish CASIS Vancouver as a leader on issues pertaining to the dialogue of security on the West Coast. The conference features security practitioners and academics from around the world discussing topics related to New Policing Approaches in an Info Rich Era, Intelligence Collaboration, AI and Fusion Centres, Terrorism and Data & Defence.

PANEL ONE: Data Driven Defence: International Strategies

This panel aims to explore the multi-domain nature of defence strategy around the world. Speakers will discuss the strategic concerns of militaries around the world and the critical lessons that can be applied to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Speakers will also examine how technological advancements have impacted military strategies. The effectiveness of small and large states’ defence policies and strategies will be examined.

PANEL TWO: Technological Innovations in Intelligence

This panel endeavours to provide an insight into technological innovations in intelligence and will highlight the challenges intelligence agencies face pertaining primarily to enabling effective information sharing among partners and the increasing role of AI in intelligence analysis. Additionally, panelists will discuss the successes of fusion centres in breaking down traditional barriers to developing effective intelligence products.

PANEL THREE: Terrorism & Extremism in the Age of Social Media

This panel examines the threats involving terrorism, identity-based extremism and the evolving security environment. It also includes a discussion on the key differences between terrorism and identity-based conflict, and the implications of this distinction with regards to the appropriate law enforcement and public safety responses.

PANEL FOUR: Policing in an Info Rich Era

This panel features new approaches to policing in an open source information era. Emerging topics encompassing contemporary policing techniques and challenges relating to privacy, facial recognition and the potential for misuse and manipulation are explored. There will be a particular focus on balancing public interest with the pragmatic requirements for effective policing in a contemporary security environment.

PANEL 5: Security Ecosystem and Gen Z-Driven New Norms

This panel endeavours to provide an insight into generational differences and the impact of Generation Z (Gen Z) on the current Security Ecosystem. As Principal actors in social activism and the normalisation of extremist rhetoric through the use of pop culture and memes arise, the importance of understanding the distinctions between Gen Z and other generations cannot be understated. Speakers will cover a range of topics including how social movements engage effectively, the malleability of generational identities and motivations, the use of popular culture and memes by activists and Right Wing Extremists and how the social contract is being rewritten by Gen Z.
