About this event

We are thrilled to return to an in-person celebration of writers, readers and book lovers in the Capital region. Join CBC Radio’s Kathryn Marlow for an entertaining evening of readings from shortlisted authors, dessert and the awarding of the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize and the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize. Cash bar and books available for sale.

This isn't your traditional gala: come be part of this relaxed and welcoming event where writers and book lovers come together to celebrate our region's incredible talent. Everyone welcome.

The $5,000 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize is awarded to a Greater Victoria author for the best book published in the preceding year in the categories of fiction, non-fiction or poetry. The five finalists are:

Gregor Craigie (non-fiction) – On Borrowed Time: North America’s Next Big Quake (Goose Lane Editions)

Esi Edugyan (non-fiction) – Out of the Sun: On Race and Storytelling (House of Anansi Press)

Barry Gough (non-fiction) – Possessing Meares Island: A Historian’s Journey into the Past of Clayoquat Sound (Harbour Publishing)

Arleen Paré (poetry) – First (Brick Books)

Amanda Swinimer (non-fiction) – The Science and Spirit of Seaweed: Discovering Food, Medicine and Purpose in the Kelp Forests of the Pacific Northwest (Harbour Publishing)

The $5,000 City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize is awarded to a Greater Victoria author or illustrator for the best children’s book published in the preceding year. The three finalists are:

Frances BackhouseBeavers: Radical Rodents and Ecosystem Engineers (Orca Book Publishers)

Wendy ProverbsAggie and Mudgy: The Journey of Two Kaska Dena Children (Heritage House Publishing)

Teoni Spathelfer White Raven (Heritage House Publishing)
