As part of TIFF’s sesquicentennial initiative "Canada on Screen", Indigenous filmmakers and artists were commissioned to create virtual reality projects envisioning Indigenous life 150 years in the future. Featuring works by Danis Goulet, Kent Monkman Studio, Scott Benesiinaabandan, and artist collective Postcommodity, made up of Raven Chacon, Kade L. Twist, and Cristóbal Martínez.

This program runs from September 19 - 22, 2019 during TPFF festival hours. Registration is required to guarantee a spot (free) - 30-minute increments.

Blueberry Pie Under a Martian Sky
Director: Scott Benesiinaabandann (Anishinabe)
2017 | 5 min | 360 Video

Bringing to life a prophetic Anishinabe legend about a young boy who travels through a wormhole back to his people’s place of origin while exploring the revitalization, growth and evolution of the Anishinabe languages.

Each Branch Determined
Director: Postcommodity (Multi-Nation, New Mexico)
2017 | 6 min | 360 Video

Imagining northern New Mexico 150 years in the future, where American Indian and Xicano pueblos work collaboratively to exercise communal and regional self-determination.

Honour Dance
Director: Kent Monkman (Cree)
2017 | 7 min | 360 Video

Based on Dance to the Berdashe (2008), this is a five-channel video installation. Set in a verdant meadow at magic hour, see a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional Indigenous ritual featuring the “Berdashe,” a gender-bending figure whose behaviour and very existence appalled European explorers in North America.

The Hunt
Director/Producer: Danis Goulet (Cree/ Métis)
2017 | 6 min | 360 Video

Visit a postwar North America in 2167, where the law is enforced by a fleet of automated orbs who patrol the skies. When an orb enters sovereign Mohawk territory to interfere with a man and his son on a goose hunt, it forces a surprising altercation.
