One in three women will experience violence at the hands of an intimate partner in their lifetime. Recent research indicates the majority will also suffer a traumatic brain injury as a result of that abuse. In this thought-provoking presentation, neuroscientist Dr. Paul van Donkelaar of University of British Columbia and Kelowna Women’s Shelter executive director Karen Mason team up to shine light on an emerging public health crisis, sharing the latest information on this understudied topic, including their own unique collaborative research project that seeks to gather key data while educating service providers and members of the public, and developing promising practices to better support abuse survivors.
Guest Speakers:
Dr. Paul van Doneklaar
Dr. Paul van Donkelaar is the Associate Vice-Principal, Research at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus and a professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences. His research team examines the mechanisms and effects of traumatic brain injury on cerebrovascular, sensorimotor, and neurocognitive function. They use these approaches to better understand head impacts in contact sport athletes, and the interface between traumatic brain injury and intimate partner violence
Karen Mason
Karen Mason is Executive Director of Kelowna Women’ Shelter, which provides emergency and transitional housing, counselling support, advocacy, and prevention education to women, and women with children, who’ve experienced gender-based violence. Karen leads a team of dedicated professionals who work to support and empower women to move forward into lives free of abuse. In collaboration with UBCO, the Shelter is engaged in a research project designed to better understand the intersection of traumatic brain injury and intimate partner violence.
Awards: Brain Care Centre’s Patrick Hirschi Lifetime Achievement Award, designed to honour an individual who has demonstrated a significant and lasting contribution towards brain injury.
