#bravenewworld explores how we define theater
Can we have a shared experience through technology? Are we witnessing an evolution in the theater-going experience? Come join us and join the conversation!
Your festival pass guarantees a spot for you in our Playwriting Workshop and access to the conversation with playwrights Bridgette Dutta Portman, writer of Ageless, and Jennifer Haley who created the ground-breaking play The Nether.
Festival Pass Includes:
Special Kick-off Conversation -- What is Theatre and Why it Matters High ticket prices, streaming content and now social distancing is forcing organizations and artists to look at theatre through a new lens. Is moving theatre online still theatre? Join us for a spirited exchange of ideas with theatre-makers. This conversation will be hosted online and will include a Q&A with YOU, our audience. May 14th, 4pm
Workshop -- Crafting Your One-Act Play - SMRT Artistic Director Tanya White, outlines a process for creating a one-act play. No experience is necessary, come with your writing tools (paper, pen and/or computer) and leave with an outline of your play and a first draft of your first scene. May 16th, 11am
Discussion --Writing the Future, Creating a Brave New World - How do playwrights create the future? Does writing for the theater limit the creative possibilities or inspire ingenuity? What about actual technology? How does an imagined world go from the page to the stage. Playwrights talk about process and what it takes to take on the possibilities of the world to come. Featured Guests: Jennifer Haley and Bridgette Dutta Portman. May 16th, 1pm

This is Santa Monica Repertory Theater’s first virtual play reading and will include our signature post show discussion. May 16th, 2pm

When we decided to call our 2nd Annual Playreading Festival #bravenewworld and invite playwrights to submit plays about an imagined future…we had no idea that we would be dealing with a global pandemic, social distancing and nationwide stay at home orders. It seems we are right in the middle of a #bravenewworld.
If you know us here at Santa Monica Repertory Theater, you know we love a good conversation about issues that matter to all of us. We typically present a play or play reading and then invite the audience to stay for a post show talk-back about the themes that resonated.
For #bravenewworld, we are featuring the play AGELESS by Bridgette Dutta Portman and we’re doing the talk-back as well. We have the technology to share an experience in real time while safely maintaining distance. Can we be together without being together? Let’s find out. On Saturday May 16th Santa Monica Repertory Theater presents: our 2nd Annual Playreading Festival #bravennewworld, plays written and directed by women via Youtube.
We are adding a playwriting workshop led by Tanya White, and a moderated conversations exploring how playwrights are writing about new technology. Come join us. After all, it’s a Brave New World
