MAKERSPACE NANAIMO is offering a very comprehensive and hands-on 3D Printing Workshop for Kids 12+ on Saturday, July 23rd, from 1pm to 4pm. They will be learning how to design, prepare, and print a 3D-printed part that they can take home and take ownership of the entire process. The workshop will be between 2-3 hours long and is limited to 6 kids to ensure everything is 100% hands-on. Hurry now before it fills up!
Making Your Ideas Real
Prototyping is the creation of an early model or sample of a new product or thing. We will do this using 3D software (CAD) and a 3D printer.
We will learn the necessary skills to design our own creations with TinkerCad and how to run the Printrbot Simple Metal 3D printer. The design can then be printed in plastic to further develop the product or idea.
This program will provide examples of the much needed skills demanded by today’s fast paced manufacturing, art, and design sectors. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will come away with their own 3D printed objects and the ability to modify their design and create new ones in the future.
Objectives and Outcomes
During this program kids will:
Explore the history of 3d printing
Explore the variety of 3d printers
Discuss Different types of filament (focus on PLA)
Safety in operation of 3d printers
Describe the principles and functions of the Printrbot Simple Metal printer
X Y Z axis and Extruder, electronics, heated bed, and power supply
Operate the control software (Repetier Host)
STL files and Slicing (Slic3r and Cura)
Setup a TinkerCad account on the internet
Explore the CAD environment
Tinkercad workspace, shapes, controls, transformation, and positioning and alignment
Create a 3d model that can be 3d printed
Export the design and print their creation to take home
It is suggested, prior to the event, to create an account at www.tinkercad.com for your child to use. This will give them an opportunity to look around the program prior to the workshop. Also suggested is to bring their own laptop, otherwise workstations can be provided.
*If you have a younger child and believe they are capable of understanding and participating in the workshop, we are flexible and trying to be inclusive. Contact us (email@example.com) if you are unsure.
