Event description

Description

MAKERSPACE NANAIMO is offering a very comprehensive and hands-on 3D Printing Workshop for Kids 12+(ish). They will be learning how to design, prepare, and print a 3D-printed part that they can take home and take ownership of the entire process. The workshop will be between 2-3 hours long and is limited to 6 kids to ensure everything is 100% hands-on. Hurry now before it fills up!

1) Please have each child register an account at www.tinkercad.com which will allow them to simply log in at the time of the workshop. Make sure they have the login credentials with them when they show up.

2) Bring your own laptop. This will help the children with continuity when they continue on with their exploration at home after the workshop. If you can't bring a laptop for each child, please reply and let us know ahead of time so that we can have a computer set up for them.

*If you have a younger child and believe they are capable of understanding and participating in the workshop, we are flexible and trying to be inclusive. Contact us (workshops@makerspacenanaimo.org) if you are unsure.

3D Prototyping

Making Your Ideas Real
  • Prototyping is the creation of an early model or sample of a new product or thing. We will do this using 3D software (CAD) and a 3D printer.
  • We will learn the necessary skills to design our own creations with TinkerCad and how to run the Printrbot Simple Metal 3D printer. The design can then be printed in plastic to further develop the product or idea.
  • This program will provide examples of the much needed skills demanded by today’s fast paced manufacturing, art, and design sectors. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will come away with their own 3D printed objects and the ability to modify their design and create new ones in the future.
Objectives and Outcomes
  • During this program kids will:
  • Explore the history of 3d printing
  • Explore the variety of 3d printers
  • Discuss Different types of filament (focus on PLA)
  • Safety in operation of 3d printers
  • Describe the principles and functions of the Printrbot Simple Metal printer
  • X Y Z axis and Extruder, electronics, heated bed, and power supply
