Event description
This workshop will critically examine the evolving place of E.P. Thomson's concept of the "moral economy" in deindustrialization studies.

About this Event

The series is organized by the Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time SSHRC Partnership project’s Industrial Closures component, as a first step in thinking transnationally about deindustrialization and its politics. Its goal is to critically examine six keywords in deindustrialization studies and consider their historical emergence and explanatory power across multiple national and thematic contexts. What do these concepts offer us? Why do some concepts emerge in one national context but not another or come to have different meanings? And what are the adjacent or intersecting concepts that emerge in their stead?

5. Moral Economy / économie morale / Sozialverträglichkeit

Friday February 12th 10h00-12h00 EST

Chairperson: Keith Gildart

Other Presenters: Tim Strangleman, Stefan Moitra, Lachlan MacKinnon, Marion Fontaine, Andy Perchard, Pascal Raggi.

Developed originally by labour historian E.P. Thompson in relation to the ways that popular feeling placed informal moral (or political) limits on the price of bread in the 17th and 18th centuries, the concept has been increasingly deployed by deindustrialization scholars in the UK. This workshop will critically examine its evolving place and consider the ways it has emerged, or not emerged, in other countries, as well as the efficacy of other related concepts such as Sozialverträglichkeit.
