Event description

Description

Smarter Science has generated a lot of interest and is being used as foundational pedagogy in British Columbia over the past few years. The redesigned B.C. Science Curriculum emphasizes the inquiry process with the new Curricular Competencies which focus on the process skills of Science.

Smarter Science is a framework that uses practical, hands-on Inquiry-based teaching and learning to build student understanding around the Big Ideas in the new curriculum. Join Mike Newnham, Founder-Smarter Science, and Karen Morley, retired science teacher, former President of BCScTA and Director of Programs at the Science Fair Foundation of BC for three days of engaging science teaching and learning.

Our Summer Summit allows more time to learn about and use the resources and strategies that we offer. We provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere for K-12 educators to extend their training, network with others, share best practices, and explore topics related to inquiry-based education in British Columbia.

Space is limited - register now so you don't miss out!

July 10 - Day One: Introduction to Smarter Science

You will learn the fundamentals of Smarter Science including the 35 inquiry-based STEM skills in the Smarter Science Framework and how to use the Steps to Inquiry and PEOE strategies to help students plan and implement their own STEM investigations.

July 11 - Day Two - Assessment & Evaluation

You are familiar with the Smarter Science framework and need to learn strategies for assessing a learner's progress. Today, you'll review your own Assessment and Evaluation practices. Then you will review an innovative Assessment Model for Skills Development and practice its application in a simulated STEM-based lesson. Finally, you will have opportunities to create your own assessment strategies.

July 3 - Day Three - Innovation & Creativity through Inquiry

Taking a STEM-based approach to inquiry requires rethinking your own pedagogical practices. Day Three focuses upon a series of powerful creativity and innovation strategies that help you to 'tweak' textbook questions and your foundational lessons into engaging inquiry-based STEM challenges. Thousands of teachers have found that student creativity rises when they are engaged in creatively-designed STEM challenges.
