Imaginary Boundaries: Bridging the Gap between the Arts and the Sciences

“[A] science knowledge only adds to the excitement and mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds; I don’t understand how it subtracts”

Richard Feynman

“I am thinking of a beautiful almond in the brain.

My thought has to do with being a person.”

Erin Mouré, “Amygdala”

Too often the Arts and the Sciences are positioned in opposition to one another; the emotional versus the rational, the subjective versus the objective, beauty versus logic. This divide is exacerbated by a scramble for limited resources—funding, space, attention—that seems to necessarily reinforce this opposition. The curious thing about this split, this divide, is that it is imaginary. Science informs art, and art and the humanities inform science. Richard Feynman can apply a knowledge of cellular biology to the flower in order to expand our aesthetic appreciation of it, and Erin Mouré can read neuroscientists and write poems that meditate on how we construct our sense of self. The experience of humanity is not limited to either the arts or the sciences, but is illuminated by a fusion of both these paths to understanding shining like the bright sun on Plato’s cave-dweller.

To help bridge these divides, reflect the interdisciplinary nature of Keyano College’s University Studies department, and serve the diverse interests of the community this year’s Keyano College University Studies Conference will explore the linkages between the Arts and the Sciences. Potential panels include scientific visualization or scientific data as art, representations of the self as cyborg, discovery, integrating music into education, and a panel discussion of science fiction. Our keynote speaker will be York University Philosophy professor, Dr. Daniel McArthur. Registration for the conference is free and includes a free lunch. This is the 6th edition of the Conference and the first to incorporate the whole of the University Studies department. We hope you join us.
