Description

Seventh Annual Winter Solstice Concert
"Weaving the light” - a celebration of music and joy

Winter Solstice will return for another year!

The concert is presented by Cari Burdett of Lila Music Centre, and long-time collaborator and Fado singer Sara Marreiros.

This year’s concert will feature a tremendously talented entourage, featuring vocalists Cari Burdett and Sara Marreiros, dancer Marisa Jackson, Adrian Dolan on piano, accordion, and mandolin, Adam Dobres on piano, and new this year, award winning teen violinist Quin Etheridge-Pedden, and Victoria’s own, bassist Nick Mintenko. The multi-genre concert will fuse a 12th Century secular canon, a popular French Canadian fiddle tune, a Portuguese duet, folk songs, gospel, and pop classics by ‘Sting.’ Burdett has also invited the Lila Community Choir to perform some of these beautiful folk arrangements and bring in a wealth of vocal harmony to the performances. Created for the delight of all ages, Solstice delights regulars and newcomers alike and sells out each year to much acclaim.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Donations will be gratefully accepted for the Witness Project, the creation of Sooke artist Carey Newman (Ha-yalth-kingeme) Master Carver and owner of the Blue Raven Gallery. The Witness Project was created to help people understand the severity and reality of the genocide in Canada. It physically weaves pieces of history to help build a physical representation of the pain of the past and hopeful reconciliation for the future. http://witnessblanket.ca/#!/project/

Multilingual and trained in opera, theatre, and dance, Cowichan-based Cari Burdett has travelled around the world as a performer. She released her first album, Magnolia, in autumn 2015 and was awarded Vocalist of the year at the 2016 Vancouver Island Music Awards. Burdett is an instructor of contemporary and classical music studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music as well as owner and primary instructor at the Lila Music Centre.
