Neuroscience and the Brain

Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain (3rd Edition)

For Neuroanatomy make sure to check the following:

For the Winner of Local Brain Bee, these additional resources will be included for the National Brain Bee exam.

- Textbook: Bear, Connors & Paradiso (Neuroscience: Exploring the brain, 3rd edition) starting with 3 chapters:

  • Chapter 2: Neurons and glia
  • Chapter 7: Structure of the nervous system
  • Chapter 22: Mental illness
  • Chapter 7 appendix: Illustrated guide to human anatomy.

Why participate?

The winner of the Victoria Brain Bee gets to compete at the National Brain Bee at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In the past years, we have been grateful to count with support from the Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) at the University of Victoria to cover some of the travel expenses associated with the competition (air fares and transportation to the Victoria International Airport).

Additionally, the winner also gets a “day in the lab”. On that day, the winner gets first-hand experience in a neuroscience lab, observing and learning about the exciting neuroscience research being done at the University of Victoria.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All participants will need to sign a form agreeing to travel with their parents or chaperone to McMaster University for the CIHR National Brian Bee. Participants not agreeing to these terms are not eligible to participate in the National competition as representatives of the Victoria and Vancouver Island Brain Bee.

For more information about the Victoria Brain Bee Registration, contact Dr. Juan Sanchez-Arias, MD (juansa@uvic.ca) or Penny Young (pyoung@uvic.ca). Other general inquries can be sent to victoria@brainbee.ca.
