Event description

Description

A new documentary play based on the collapse of Target in Canada will be performed in one of the retailer’s former stores

Sunday December 3 2017 | Centre on Barton, Hamilton | Tickets: Pay What You Can

Robert Motum, a Toronto-based playwright and theatre artist, has spent the last two years interviewing and gathering the stories of former Target Canada employees. Their words have been compiled into A Community Target – a verbatim play which examines the human story of Canada’s precarious retail climate by depicting Target’s whirlwind venture north of the border. The play features voices from nearly every part of the former corporation – from cashiers and custodians in the stores, to managers and directors from the Mississauga head office. Even the words of a former CEO appear throughout the text. Another dozen characters share their connections to the Target Canada story – lawyers, architects, retail experts… Michael Bublé (who performed at a corporate launch party). A cast of six performers portray close to thirty characters; all of which are based on real people.

The play was commissioned and developed by Outside the March as part of their 2016 Forward March initiative. It received a short workshop production with the company in August last year. Since proposing this project to OtM, Motum’s intention has been to stage the piece inside one of the retailer’s former locations. An opportunity has arisen, for one night only, to do exactly that.

In Hamilton’s east end, at Centre on Barton, the former 100,000 square foot Target still sits vacant. Over the last few months, a community organization called ‘Right on Target’ has filled that space with creative pop-up events. Motum is partnering with them to bring these Target stories back to their former home. Occupying the space for one night only – Sunday December 3 – six performers will present a staged reading of Motum’s text. Whether or not you were a Target customer, come witness the drama that played out behind the scenes of a 7 billion dollar mistake.

Robert Motum BIO
Robert Motum is an emerging director, playwright, and theatre creator. He recently completed his MA in Practising Performance at Aberystwyth University in Wales. Since returning to the GTA, he has been an artist on Outside the March’s inaugural Forward March development initiative. The piece, A Community Target, received a workshop production with OtM and Why Not Theatre last summer. With his background in site-specific theatre, Robert has staged work on an active city bus, in a dorm room, over Snapchat, in a car, on the streets of Leslieville, in a castle, and occasionally even in a theatre space. He is particularly interested in working with specific communities and non-performers to share diverse stories that question what it means to be Canadian in 2017. Robert was a participant in the 2017 Stratford Festival Playwrights’ Retreat.
